How Can We Make Crime Pay? RUSI Podcast
The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is the world’s oldest independent think tank on international defence and security, having been founded in 1831. They aim to inform, influence and enhance public debate on a safer and more stable world. A research-led institute, they produce independent, practical and innovative analyses to address the complex challenges of the modern world. RUSI is the podium of choice for world leaders and senior policymakers and is ideally placed to attract high-quality speakers and participants at its events.
In February our co-founder Aidan Larkin was invited as a guest speaker on the RUSI podcast, ‘The Suspicious Transaction Report’ with the proceeds of crime expert Helen Wood. They discussed how asset recovery can be improved to get more money back into society to support communities and help the organisation tackling crime and trying to improve lives. They also spoke about the terrifying fact that only 1% of criminal proceeds are ultimately confiscated, as well as why crime still pays and the barriers to action.
Reflecting on the experience, Aidan Larkin comments:
“The RUSI CFCS guides and commentary have always been the benchmark for the financial crime industry for me. It’s genuinely a real pleasure and privilege for me personally, to be invited to discuss my beloved world of asset management and the work we do at Asset Reality.
I want to reiterate that it’s unscripted and unapologetically frank in some sections. For context, I'm not being an armchair spectator and complaining about where we are getting it wrong for the sake of a rant."
"I work closely with charities that used to receive proceeds of crime-related grants to put to good use in the community, emphasis on ‘used to’. I get to see first-hand the excellent results and positive impact these sorts of schemes have had. There’s too much upside in my opinion to not embrace the difficult conversations about what needs to change to try and make crime pay for society.”
